UMAR YAHAYA

UMAR YAHAYA

My Roam

O tired heavenly torch
on my way shine
So that I won't falter
to die on the vine.

Lane laced with snares
of love-like hate.
Firm and straight
shall remain my steps
As I grope my path
to the august gate
In these even and
rocky landscapes...

Past mountains, plains
and lonely vales;
Eyeing committees* and
howling packs;
Across the domains of
sharks and whales;
My thick faith my cover
'gainst arid attacks.

I may speed on bruised
elbows and knees;
Stuck be my mired feet,
or weak my steed;
Succumb yet not shall I
to the bites and bees
On my heart and limbs,
but  will proceed:

That at the end of this
my barren roam
Shall I make it to home—
soul and form.

Hope

Hope has made
A fisherman of me

A ripple would crash against the sinker
Shaking it
Making me skip a breath
Like a cat in ambush
On hearing the squeak of a mouse
Hidden in the haven of it hole

I move my hand
In tandem with my heart
To the disappointment of my eyes
For the umpteenth time

Poor worm on my hook
Still there neath the waters
Clinging to the barb
Wishing to lure some meaty catch

May it never deteriorate
To pieces down to the bed
Having spent these millenia
Unseen by a fish
Undared by a toad

O hope
You have truly made
An angler of me.

Waking Up

No longer shall I
Worship those aloof stars
Who twinkle not to guide me home;

No more revere
The strong eagles' wings
That yet bear me not during storm;

To hell with the
Fat and lofty mountains —
The greedy and unfeeling granites..

Who take up
The greenest fields
For their girth an' ill-gotten heights.

Have carried basket
For many a lucky fisherman
Sans for once tasting of the juicy catch.

Now, it is time
To brood my abandoned eggs
That my chicks too may someday hatch.
