MARY
BONE
Winter
Nuts
The wind blew the leaves
away from my pecan harvest.
Squirrels and birds watched
from a distance hoping
we would leave a few behind.
It was great to push some into
a hole at the base of a tree.
They were in storage
for a later time when ice would cover the
ground.
The winter nuts sustained us all.
Surviving
Hand over hand we crawled
On the barren ground,
Looking for sustenance.
Food was scarce.
Turnips were found
Underneath the ground.
Times were tough.
A good turnip soup
Warmed our bones,
Helping us survive the drought.
Dustbowl
Existence
A dustbowl existence
left my family
parched and panting.
Buckets were placed
underneath waterspouts
in case a cloud came up to
refresh our water supply.
We thirsted for the good times.
